Visual Elements & Composition

The image is rendered in steel-engraving style, built from light grey, charcoal grey, pale cream and mid grey. Light grey covers nearly half the scene and gives the sky and open ground their quiet tone, while charcoal grey gathers in the rocky foreground and the figures. The walled city sits on the hillside at the centre, with a domed building and minarets rising above its roofline. In the lower part of the composition, a group of robed figures stands on the rocks and a camel caravan with riders moves along a dirt road. English artist and travel writer William Henry Bartlett made this view in the 1850s, during his extensive travels through the Levant. He was known for technical precision and for recording places as they appeared, and this work shows that approach.
