Dunn, Harvey Thomas - The Flare - 1918-09 - T-Shirt

Harvey Dunn's 1918 charcoal drawing The Flare freezes a night battlefield in the instant a flare lights up the wire and the men waiting in it.

Visual Elements & Composition

Charcoal and crayon hatching fills nearly the whole sheet, with charcoal and dark umber making up most of the tonal field. A flare bursts near the top centre, and its pale cream light spills down the sky and across the open ground. Silhouetted soldiers stand and crouch in the middle distance, one with a helmeted head, while upright stakes and tangled wire run across the foreground. A soldier lies low at the left edge, and a distant line of shapes marks another position on the horizon. The title is lettered in the lower right margin beside the artist's signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

The flare was the standard way to light no man's land at night, revealing movement and exposing anyone caught in the open. Here the brief blaze fixes the figures in place, so they are visible only because the light has caught them. The dark sky above carries the sense of how much of the war was spent waiting in darkness. Dunn (1884-1952) was an American illustrator who studied under Howard Pyle and is known for his painted scenes of the Great Plains. This drawing, dated 1918 and signed with the AEF designation, comes from his wartime work that year and shows the same storytelling use of light and shadow found across his career.

Wearing the Stillness of No Man's Land

The composition is built around a single moment of light, which suits a tee where the image sits across the chest and sleeves and reads as one scene at a glance. The dense hatching and pale flare read clearly against the shirt, so the tense stillness of the field stays the focus as you wear it.
