Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing depicts an ordinary stretch of marshland rather than a dramatic view, and it dwells on atmosphere. Nineteenth-century landscape artists returned to wetlands to study reflected light, mist and the point where land gives way to water. Here the tree mass anchors the left side, and the eye travels from the dark foreground to a faint horizon. Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901), born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, worked mainly in Boston and became a notable landscape painter. His mature style favoured soft light and subdued colour, and he received a bronze medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. This undated pencil study carries the same concern for open tonal space found in his paintings.
