Edward Mitchell Bannister, born St. - Landscape with Trees - n.d. - T-Shirt

A dark cluster of trees holds the left side of this charcoal landscape, while a wide, flat field opens out beneath a streaked evening sky.

Visual Elements & Composition

The grove of rounded crowns and dense undergrowth forms the main mass of the drawing, and the eye settles there before moving across the open ground to the right. The field recedes toward a low, distant horizon, and the foreground is built from horizontal, grainy strokes that suggest uneven earth and patches of grass. Above, layered marks in the sky grow lighter near the horizon and darker toward the top edges. The palette is charcoal black, slate grey, dull olive and pale cream, with the cream carrying the light of the sky.

Meaning & Symbolism

The contrast between a shaded grove and a broad expanse of open ground gives the view its stillness. The trees stand as shelter against a wide, unbroken plain, a quiet stretch of country at the end of the day. Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and worked mainly in Boston, where he became a notable landscape painter. His mature work favoured soft light and subdued colour in the Barbizon-influenced tradition, and he received a bronze medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. This undated charcoal drawing carries the same concern for tree masses, open fields and atmospheric skies that runs through his landscapes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A drawing like this reads best at a few feet, where the grove, the field and the sky separate into clear masses. Printed across the chest, the trees sit at the centre of the view and the open field spreads across the body of the shirt, so the calm distance of the original carries onto the garment as you move.
