Edward Mitchell Bannister, born St. - Landscape with Three Cows - n.d. - T-Shirt

Three cattle graze in a meadow at the foot of a wooded rise, drawn in quick, broken charcoal strokes beneath a pale, cloudy sky.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from charcoal grey, pale grey, dark olive and off-white. The animals sit close together near the centre of the lower half, heads lowered to the grass. Behind them, a dense band of trees fills the middle of the picture, with taller trunks and rounded crowns on the left and lower foliage on the right. The darkest masses sit in the woodland, while the soft, feathered clouds lighten toward the upper centre. The signature, E H Bannister, appears within the drawing.

Meaning & Symbolism

The subject is an ordinary pastoral moment: cattle feeding quietly at the edge of a wood, with no figure or incident to pull attention away from them. Livestock in open country was a central theme for late nineteenth-century landscape artists, who valued the calm rhythm of grazing animals set against trees and sky. Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and worked mainly in Boston. His mature style followed the tonal, Barbizon-influenced approach of soft light and subdued colour, and he received a bronze medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. This work is a chalk and charcoal drawing on paper, held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A horizontal landscape suits a tee well. The wide field of meadow and sky stretches across the chest, and the cattle, small within that expanse, reward a closer look. Up close, the quick strokes and tonal shifts from dark trees to pale clouds become easier to follow. Viewed from across the room, the massed darkness of the woodland anchors the design, and the light sky lifts it, so the scene reads as calm at any distance.
