Meaning & Symbolism

The scene is a familiar rural routine: livestock watering at the end of the day, with people resting nearby. The reflections and the shaded grove give the pond a calm, nearly still character. Bannister (1828–1901) was a Canadian-born painter who settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and became one of the most accomplished African American artists of the nineteenth century.
