Edward Mitchell Bannister, born St. - Landscape with Cows and Figures Moving through Pasture - n.d. - T-Shirt

A charcoal pasture landscape by Edward Mitchell Bannister, with two small figures standing among tall grass beside grazing cows, trees rising at the left and an open sky beyond.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in soft, dark charcoal on warm tan paper. Tall grass fills the lower half of the sheet, while large trees with thick, feathery foliage rise along the left edge, their dark trunks set against the lighter ground. Two figures stand close together near the lower centre, one in a pale garment and one in a dark jacket and wide-brimmed hat. To their right, one dark cow and one pale cow graze, and the land recedes toward a low, hazy horizon under an open, luminous sky. The open light at right balances the dense darks of the trees.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title places cows and figures moving through pasture, linking people and animals within the steady rhythm of rural life. The figures are small and unemphatic, so the scene reads as a quiet passage through the land rather than a story with a climax. The landscape itself carries the sense of time passing, giving the drawing a calm, slightly melancholy atmosphere. Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901) was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and became one of the most accomplished African American artists of the nineteenth century. His tonal handling of trees, fields and sky is central to his reputation, and this sheet, held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection, shows the free charcoal technique he brought to landscape drawing alongside his finished paintings.

Rendered Across the Chest

Bannister's drawing works through soft gradations, so the pasture, trees and open sky read as one continuous field of tone. On a tee, that field sits in front of you as you move, with the dark trees anchoring one side and the bright open sky on the other. The small figures and grazing cows stay quiet within it, rewarding a closer look as the grass and horizon come into view.
