Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - Sketches, Virgin and Child - 1820–1850 - T-Shirt

This is a working study sheet by Italian draughtsman Fortunato Duranti, showing the Virgin and Child drawn again and again across one page in pen, brown ink and grey wash.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pen and brown ink sit over grey chalk or graphite, with patches of pale grey and slate blue-grey wash. Several standing female figures appear at different scales, each holding a child in the crook of one arm. The largest figure, at right, is frontal and draped in a veil and mantle, modelled in dark wash. Smaller studies in the centre and along the bottom repeat the same pose with looser contours. Handwritten Italian runs across the upper part of the sheet, and a Latin phrase, Hoc unum scio, me nihil scire, sits in an oval cartouche at upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The repeated standing type shows Duranti working out the proportions and the fall of drapery for a central image of Italian devotional art. Changing the scale from large to small tests the figure's silhouette and how it would sit within a bigger arrangement. The Latin phrase, a line attributed to Socrates meaning "I know one thing: that I know nothing," sits among the drawings like a note in a studio notebook. The sheet is dated 1820–1850, the middle decades of Duranti's career, when he produced religious and allegorical subjects.

Why It Works on a Tee

The largest figure on this sheet anchors the page, and it translates directly to the front of a shirt, where the Madonna stands at full scale and the smaller studies read as a sequence around her. Wearers will see the drawing change as they move, much as Duranti's eye moved from one study to the next.
