Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Botanical Sketches, Vermont - October 6, 1865 v2 - T-Shirt

This graphite page of plant studies by Frederic Edwin Church sets a berried shrub beside grasses and flowering stalks, all drawn in Vermont in early October 1865.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pencil lines sit on a warm buff ground, and the paper dominates the frame. On the left, a shrub with thin, forking branches hangs small clusters of dark berries along its upright stem. Near the centre, a tuft of tall, straight blades rises from the base, while a slender stalk on the right carries narrow alternating leaves and a flat-topped head of tiny blossoms. A further pair of stems at upper right bears clustered flowers. Pencil notes label leaves and colours beside several forms, and rough hatching marks the low ground at the bottom.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church arranged these forms as a comparison of growth habits, so arching branches, upright grass and flowering stems can be read together on one sheet. His handwritten remarks record how a leaf had turned, how a stem was coloured and where a plant grew, turning the page into a working reference for the studio. Church, one of the principal Hudson River School painters, drew plants with the same exactness he gave mountains and skies. These autumn observations show the botanical attention that underpinned the detail of his finished landscapes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is seen up close and moves with the body, so the viewer meets the sheet at conversation distance. The shrub's branches and the grass tufts spread across the chest, and the handwritten notes stay legible to anyone standing nearby, as if reading over the artist's shoulder in the studio.
