Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Four Floating Icebergs, Canada - July 16, 1859 v3 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study of four icebergs drifting through Canadian waters, recorded by Frederic Edwin Church during his northern voyage in the summer of 1859.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from a small group of pale, floating masses set on open water. Each iceberg is a distinct form, so the eye moves from one to the next across the sheet. The work is done in graphite on light brown wove paper, and that warm ground gives the cool, pale ice its quiet contrast. Nothing in the scene is crowded. The open water around the bergs does as much work as the bergs themselves.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made these observations aboard the schooner The Hotspur, sketching the northern landscape directly in front of his subject. In the nineteenth century, glaciers and icebergs stood for the sublime, for the raw power of nature and the impermanence of what it shapes. The study reflects the Hudson River School, the movement whose ambitious scale rested on close, patient observation. Sketches like this one were the groundwork for the finished studio canvases that followed.

Why It Suits the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen at a distance in passing, so a drawing like this rewards a second look. The four bergs read as a small, connected group, which suits a single chest print. Wearing it carries a nineteenth-century record of the far north into everyday clothes, built on the same careful looking Church brought to the Arctic.
