Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Bari - 1844 - T-Shirt

A quick pencil study of a stone tower on a shoreline, drawn on pale paper with a single sailboat on the water.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is mostly empty parchment, and that emptiness does the work. A squared stone tower stands on a low promontory at the right, with a smaller attached structure at its base. A narrow sailboat floats near the centre-left, its mast set down in a few light strokes. Low hills and a line of distant buildings or trees run along the left horizon, and the sky is left almost blank. The palette stays in soft parchment, pencil grey and pale ochre, so the tower and the boat read as the only solid forms. A handwritten note along the lower edge records a date, "June 7/44."

Meaning & Symbolism

The tower speaks of settlement and defence at the edge of a wide sea, while the lone boat points to movement and everyday coastal life. The handwritten date marks the sheet as a direct record made on the spot, not a finished studio picture. Kellogg worked in the nineteenth-century tradition of travel sketching, where artists drew landscapes and architecture quickly in pencil and returned to those notes for larger paintings. The drawing captures the outline of a building and the shape of the land rather than surface detail, and it shows how the artist looked at a place while abroad. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A pencil sketch made for quick observation suits a shirt worn in daily life. The tower and boat sit within a open field of pale tone, so the design reads as a single, calm scene across the chest. The sketch's light line and open sky carry onto the shirt as a quiet, unhurried image, one that rewards a closer look from the wearer and anyone standing nearby.
