Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Minieh - 1844 - T-Shirt

A pencil view of a multi-storey stone building in the town of Minieh, its arched doorway and latticed windows set between two palms, with a single seated figure resting in front of the entrance.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment cream dominates the sheet, and graphite grey carries every line. A coursed masonry building fills the centre, with its arched doorway at the heart of the composition and rows of arched and latticed windows stacked above it. The upper storeys step back at the right, while a low wall runs across the left side. Two palm trees frame the scene, and the seated figure anchors the ground before the doorway. Light, economical pencil strokes leave most of the ground open. The lower right corner carries the handwritten inscription Minieh - Jan 16 1844.

Meaning & Symbolism

Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, made this drawing during his travels on the Nile in 1844. Minieh is a town in Middle Egypt, and Kellogg recorded its streets as a working place rather than a monument. The house and its entrance are the centre of the picture, while the palms and seated figure give a sense of everyday life beside the architecture. The lattice windows and arched openings describe local building forms that a European traveller would note on the upriver journey. The original sheet is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection and belongs to a group of Egyptian drawings from that year.

On the T-Shirt

A tee carries its image across the chest and moves with the wearer, so a view meant to be studied closely is seen in passing, in the street, at a glance. The wide horizontal sheet suits the chest, with the arched doorway placed near the middle of the design. Kellogg drew on the spot for later reference, and this design brings that habit of close looking into everyday wear.
