Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Semelud () - 1844 - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil sketch of the riverside town of Semelud in Egypt, with palms and a slender minaret rising above low houses, dated January 15, 1844.

Visual Elements & Composition

The town fills a narrow band across the middle of a pale cream page. Its low, flat-roofed houses stretch along the horizon, with date palms and scattered trees breaking the skyline. A single slender minaret stands toward the right and sets the vertical beat of the composition. Below, grasses and shrubs are sketched in quick, loose strokes that thin out toward the lower edge, leaving the foreground open. The palette is restrained: cream, pencil grey and light grey, with the place name and date written on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The minaret and palm groves mark a settlement on the Nile in Middle Egypt, where daily life followed the river and the cultivated land along its banks. Kellogg, an American painter, travelled in Egypt and the Near East in the 1840s and recorded towns, monuments and landscapes as he went. This drawing belongs to that body of travel studies. It was made on the spot, so the view records the place at the moment of observation rather than a constructed scene, and it reflects the documentary approach typical of travel drawing of its time.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A sketch built on distance and quiet suits a shirt, where the design is seen as you move through the day. The town's silhouette sits across the chest as a single horizon, so the eye reads the skyline and the minaret first, then the palms, then the open ground below. The restraint of the drawing means it works without bold color, letting the outline of a far-off town carry the design.
