Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Castle of Corfu - 1845 - T-Shirt

This pencil study shows the fortified waterfront of Corfu town, with a long barracks range and sloping bastion walls rising above moored sailing boats.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built in faint sepia pencil on a warm buff sheet, so the cream ground dominates and the marks sit lightly on top of it. A long, multi-storey building with evenly spaced rows of windows anchors the centre, while the sloping bastion and a walled ridge climb behind it. Lower buildings step along the shore to the left, and in the foreground several masted vessels sit at anchor, with a two-masted boat at right. The only lettering is the inscription in the lower left corner, reading "Castle of Corfu." The sky and water are handled loosely, while the fortress walls and boat rigging are drawn with far more detail.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch shows the fortress as part of a working port rather than a ruin. Corfu's Venetian-era stronghold guarded a harbour where military authority and merchant trade met. From 1815 to 1864 the Ionian Islands, Corfu among them, were under British protection, and the island's forts and harbour were central to British naval and commercial presence in the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. The drawing was made by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, and is dated 1845. Pencil harbour views like this one were made on the spot and served travelling artists both as personal records of foreign ports and as reference for later work.

Designed for the Wearer

Harbour views like this reward a close look, and a tee puts that detail right at eye level as you move. The composition's quiet, documentary calm reads well across a chest, where the fortress and boats sit as one continuous scene. Wearing it means carrying a piece of 1845 Corfu harbour with you, drawn by hand in pencil and kept in its original warm cream tone.
