Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Naxos-Castle of Paros - 1843 - T-Shirt

A pencil panorama of Aegean islands, drawn from the deck of a ship, with a flat-topped castle hill on Paros at its centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite on pale parchment, with soft pencil grey and taupe carrying most of the sheet. A flat-topped hill with a small cluster of buildings on its summit sits in the upper band, flanked by lower ridges and a more jagged peak to the right. Further along the horizon, low islands and headlands dissolve into fine, broken lines. Rounded hills close the view at the bottom edge. Handwritten captions name the Castle of Paros, Naxos on the left, and Aegina, and the date 22 Dec 43 is written on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

For travellers in the Cyclades, the castled summits were the landmarks by which a voyage was known. Kellogg fixes those landmarks as they appeared from the deck, noting that the views were taken from behind the vessel. The sketch records a sequence of islands passed on one crossing, so it reads as a route as much as a landscape. Kellogg was an American painter born in Manlius, New York, who made pencil and watercolour studies across the Mediterranean and the Near East in the 1840s. This sheet belongs to that travel record and shows his practice of recording topography on the spot.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A horizon this wide suits the front of a shirt. The islands run across the chest in a single line, and the castle hill on Paros settles near the centre, where the eye lands first. Wearing it puts the view at the same height as the viewer, the way Kellogg saw it from the deck, with Naxos and Aegina fixed at the edges as the captions place them.
