Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Mt. Pellegrino, Palermo - unknown - T-Shirt

A watercolour of Mount Pellegrino rising above the Palermo waterfront, its steep limestone face lit in ochre and grey above a blue sea.

Visual Elements & Composition

The rock fills the centre of the sheet. A broad, shadowed massif climbs at upper left toward a double peak, while a sheer cliff falls to the right, striped with ochre and grey. Green scrub covers the lower slopes, and a line of dark trees runs along the base. Along the shoreline, pale buildings with warm orange and salmon façades sit above a band of blue water, and the sky is a washed grey-blue. The lettering at lower left records the mountain's name and the place, Mount Pellegrino - Palermo, with the mark "No 2".

Meaning & Symbolism

Monte Pellegrino is the limestone headland that closes the bay of Palermo on Sicily's northwest coast. Its cliffs and the sanctuary on its slopes made it one of the most recognisable features of the city's skyline, and travellers arriving by sea saw it before the town itself. The composition places the mountain as both a natural barrier and a landmark that frames the harbour. The artist, Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, was an American painter born in Manlius, New York, who worked in watercolour during extended travels in the Mediterranean and the Near East. Coastal views like this were common among nineteenth-century travellers recording ports and headlands as they passed, and this sheet reflects his travel work, where landform and atmosphere take precedence over fine architectural detail.

Made for the Wearer on the Move

Printed across the chest of a tee, the view keeps its sense of distance: the mountain reads as a single bold mass from across a room, the way it once rose out of the sea for ships approaching the bay. The soft grey-blue sky and pale parchment tones let the ochre cliff and blue water stand out clearly against the fabric, so the landscape holds its shape as you move through the day.
