Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Palermo and Capri - unknown - T-Shirt

A steep Mediterranean cliff mass rises over a band of blue sea, with sailboats and a windmill set along the shore, rendered in watercolour and pencil.

Visual Elements & Composition

The cliffs fill the upper centre of the view, their faces built from vertical pencil hatching in grey and dark tones. Light watercolour washes of parchment and pale grey-blue open the sky and water around them, while a sea blue band sits quietly below. At the right, a smaller rocky islet breaks the surface. In the lower left, light triangular sails rest on calm water beside a low shoreline, where a windmill and a cluster of buildings line the edge of the land. Faint pencil inscriptions appear at the lower left and beside the cliffs, and the word "Capri" is legible among them.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscriptions name Palermo and Capri, two Mediterranean places that drew travellers through the nineteenth century. Capri's steep limestone coast is one of the most recognised landforms of the Bay of Naples, and the sketch's focus on sheer rock and open sea captures the drama visitors found in such shorelines. The sailing craft, shoreline buildings and windmill describe a harbour town where working life runs right up against natural monumentality. The artist was Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, and this sheet records coastal views from his travels in the Mediterranean. His economical handling of rock and sea shows how a few quick passages of colour and line can hold the character of a place.

Made for the Wearer on This Tee

Cliffs and open water read best at a distance, and a tee is the one piece of clothing that carries a whole scene across the chest and back at a glance. The tall, dark cliff sits where the eye lands first, with the sea and sails opening out beneath it, so the composition works as you move through a room or walk down the street. The quiet, expansive mood of the original sketch comes through on the body of a shirt that is worn every day.
