Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Sea of Tiberiasfrom Hot Baths - unknown - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil study of a steep hill and a single standing figure at the edge of a wide plain, dated April 1841 in the lower corner.

Visual Elements & Composition

A tall, rounded hill fills the left half of the sheet, its slope built from diagonal hatching on the lit side and a ridged outline along the crest. In the foreground, one figure in a long garment faces the hill, with a few stones and low tufts of scrub at his feet. To the right, a flatter tract of land runs toward the horizon, marked by a few distant figures and fading ridges. Pale cream sky fills the upper part of the sheet, and the handwritten note "From Hot Baths" with its date sits in the lower right.

Meaning & Symbolism

Hot Baths refers to the thermal springs near Tiberias on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, a place valued since antiquity for its warm waters. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, travelled through Europe and the Near East in the 1840s and recorded this terrain in a dated group of pencil studies with place names in the margins. The sheltering hill and the figure give the landscape human scale, inviting the viewer into a region the artist saw as carrying historic and sacred weight, the land of the Gospels.

Carrying the Sketch Onto a Tee

A sketch built on light, economical lines suits a shirt, where the design sits across the chest and reads as a drawing rather than a photograph. The hill and the lone figure stay in the centre of the view, so the composition holds its quiet, expansive mood on the body of the garment just as it does on the paper.
