University of East Anglia Coat of Arms T-Shirt
This t-shirt proudly displays the striking Coat of Arms of the University of East Anglia (UEA), a symbol rich in history and meaning.
The Shield
The central element of the design is the shield, a captivating composition. It features a field of deep blue (Azure) upon which three golden crowns (Or) are prominently displayed. These crowns, ancient in style, are traditional emblems of East Anglia, referencing St. Edmund, a revered early king.
In the upper portion of the shield (chief), a silver/white (Argent) castle with three domed towers rises. Each tower is adorned with a fluttering flag of St. George, the emblem of England, and the castle's gateway (port) is depicted in black (Sable). The portcullis, signifying protection and vigilance, is raised and rendered in gold (Or).
The Crest
Above the shield rests the crest, a further display of artistic detail. An angel, clad in silver (Argent) robes with a blue (Azure) mantle, emerges from clouds depicted in their natural colours. The angel is crowned and winged in gold (Or), and holds a naturally coloured (proper) sword with a golden hilt and pommel in its right hand. In its left hand, it carries an open book, also proper, edged and bound in gold (Or).
Supporters
The shield is flanked by two golden lions (Or), each in a guardant pose (facing the viewer). Each lion wears a blue (Azure) purse suspended from its neck, connected by tasseled cords. With an inner paw, each lion clutches a golden (Or) "ancient crown," reinforcing the link to East Anglia.
Overall Symbolism
This intricate design reflects UEA's connection to its region, its commitment to knowledge and the University's rich history. The crowns honour St. Edmund. The castle is taken from Norwich's emblem. The purses relate to UEA’s first Chancellor, Lord Mackintosh of Halifax.
