Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from pale grey wash on cream paper, with light stone tones filling the facade and charcoal shadows deepening the arch, the cornice and the recesses. The lower storey is laid out in horizontal bands, and the arched doorway sits at the centre, flanked by banded columns. Within the niches on either side, a bust rests above a classical urn wrapped in garlands. A heavy cornice with a row of brackets runs across the top, and a balustrade of urn-shaped balusters carries four standing figures, two at each end. A domed roof with a small lantern closes the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

A mausoleum was built to house burial remains, to commemorate the dead and to give a family a permanent monument. The urns in the niches are a traditional funerary emblem, while the busts and standing figures recall the virtues and memory of those being honoured. The arched doorway suggests the entrance to a solemn interior, and the dome gives the structure its sense of ceremony. The sheet reflects later eighteenth-century funerary design, when architects combined classical proportions with sculptural decoration. It is dated 1780 and is held in the Cooper Hewitt collection of the Smithsonian.
