Visual Elements & Composition

Pale grey and warm white fill most of the sheet, while charcoal grey wash deepens the recess behind the figure. The niche is a plain round-headed arch, and the statue stands at its centre, her garment falling from the shoulders and gathered over one arm as her head tilts downward. Beneath her, a moulded plinth supports a pedestal with a central mask, a band of small mouldings, and side panels of vertical ornament. The front panel carries a relief of laurel garlands looped around an urn set on a small scrolled base. Every element rises on a single vertical axis, so the eye moves from the base up to the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The statue follows the drapery and pose of ancient sculpture, models widely copied in the later eighteenth century. Placing a figure in a niche above a richly decorated pedestal was a standard way to give a room antique dignity. Laurel carries associations with honour, and the urn with remembrance. The sheet is a design for an interior setting, the kind of drawing prepared before a niche, chimneypiece or pedestal was built. Dated 1780, it is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection and records how neoclassical designers pictured a sculpture held within architecture rather than standing free in space.
