Visual Elements & Composition

Chestnut brown dominates the design, with pale cream, tan and white providing the light forms. Each swag falls in a curve from a small white daisy with a yellow centre, and fine wavy lines run down the field beside them, dotted with small white points. Tan acanthus-like leaves rise from a central stem, flanked by sprays of ochre flowers. Along the outer edges, a border of alternating green, cream and dark diamonds sits beside a band of tan leaves and small spirals. The diagonal lines draw the eye toward the corner, where the composition gathers.

Meaning & Symbolism

The swag, the corner and the repeated border form a classic decorative structure, used on walls, screens and textiles to frame a panel or fill the angle of a room. The daisies and garlands suggest blooms hung from a moulding, a device that gave painted ornament a sense of lightness. This gouache study, held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection, is a design for a corner or border element and dates to 1825–1850, when ornament of this kind was widely applied to interiors.
