unknown - Design for a Motif off a Woven or Embroidery Fabric - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

This is a symmetrical Gothic Revival roundel drawn in a single deep red line on cream paper, built from cusped circles, trefoils and pointed arches.

Visual Elements & Composition

Crimson red carries nearly all of the drawing, set against a pale cream ground. The outer outline rises to a pointed crown, with three leaf-like finials along the top and smaller pinnacles at the corners. Inside, a band of cusped circles, trefoils and scrolled arcs surrounds a central rosette of lobed petals, with a small trefoil at its heart. Smaller three- and four-lobed foils fill the gaps between the arcs. Nothing is shaded or filled; the composition relies on line, repetition and balance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Gothic Revival drew on medieval architecture, where tracery, cusping and pointed arches decorated churches and windows. The rosette and foiled circles echo the glazing and vaults of those buildings, which gives the design its ordered, devotional character. Its symmetry and repeating units made it suitable for stencil, inlay or embroidered surfaces. This example was made as pattern material, the kind circulated across the second quarter of the nineteenth century for craftsmen working in wood, metal, glass and textiles. The original sheet is dated 1825–1850 and is held in the Cooper Hewitt collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A roundel is a centred form, so it sits naturally across the chest, where its crown and rosette read as a single focal point. The fine cusped lines show their detail up close, while the bold outer silhouette stays legible from across the room. Wearing it puts a piece of 19th-century pattern-making in an everyday context, with the rosette at the centre of the shirt.
