unknown - Design for a Woven Fabric - 1775-1800 - T-Shirt

This is a late eighteenth-century textile design: two joined sheets of painted slate-blue ground, broken by vertical sprigs of pale blossoms and small bouquets of pink and white flowers.

Visual Elements & Composition

Slate blue-grey covers most of the surface, with cream white, dusty pink, sage green and lavender as the only other colours. Each sheet is organised vertically. A sprig of pale blossoms opens the column, and small, stylised leaf and petal forms in cream and white repeat down the centre at even intervals. Bouquets of pink roses, white blossoms, buds and green leaves sit lower, beside the columns, giving the eye places to rest. The brushwork is light and flat, in gouache on paper, and the edges are uneven.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design belongs to a common scheme of the later eighteenth century, when a light ground was divided by vertical sprigs and small bouquets so the pattern could repeat across a wall or a length of cloth. The naturalistic flowers reflect the period's taste for botanical motifs in silks, wallpapers and printed cottons. The painted sheet is a study rather than a finished cloth, which shows the designer testing how motifs sat against a ground. The pale leaf columns set the rhythm, and the pink and white bouquets supply the colour.

Designed for the Body

A tee is a surface that moves, and this pattern is built for that. The vertical columns run down the torso and rise toward the shoulders, so the sprigs read as upright lines when you wear it. The bouquets sit low, where they catch the eye as you move. Each sprig on the shirt is a fragment of a larger repeat, the same way the original designer intended the motifs to be seen.
