unknown - Design for a Woven Fabric - 1830–1850 - T-Shirt

This is a painted design for a woven fabric from between 1830 and 1850, built from vertical columns of roses set against a pale cream ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is organised into distinct vertical bands. The left column is dominated by large roses rendered in mid grey and black, with leaves and a small chain of pink and green buds running between them. The right side repeats clusters of pink and crimson roses framed by green leaves, pale aqua forget-me-not sprigs and tiny yellow flowers. These clusters sit on narrow striped bands in pale aqua and black. Thin grey foliage sprays and tiny pink buds fill the spaces between the groups, so the whole layout reads as ordered and regular.

Meaning & Symbolism

Roses and forget-me-nots were among the most common motifs in textile design of the early nineteenth century, carrying associations of romance and remembrance. The arrangement of bouquets on bands reflects the period taste for floral patterns that could be woven in stripes and repeats, with individual sprays standing out against a plainer ground. The monochrome grey column beside the coloured clusters shows the weaver how tone contrast would be handled within a single repeat. The design was prepared for the textile trade, and the catalogue record dates it to 1830–1850.

Printed on a Tee

A woven-fabric design is built to be read across a full width of cloth, and here that repeat is brought onto a single garment. The vertical bands run down the body of the shirt as a sequence of rose clusters, so each bouquet can be seen up close as the wearer moves. The pale ground and the strong pink and crimson clusters stand out clearly on the chest and sleeve.
