unknown - Design for the Bottom Corner of a Woven Fabric - 1815–1830 - T-Shirt

This painted design fragment shows a floral border for the bottom corner of a woven textile, with large stylised blossoms, scrolling stems and lattice-filled petals set against a warm brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Russet brown fills most of the sheet, and the flowers rise out of it in cream white, pale gold, rose pink and sage green. The largest blossoms dominate the centre, their petals drawn in white and pale lilac with diamond and dotted lattice fills, outlined in pink, green and yellow. Scrolling stems and leafy sprays run between them, with small clusters of buds and curled foliage. The motifs form a continuous horizontal band that steps up at the top left, where a separate corner section turns the pattern around the edge of the cloth. The torn, irregular edges of the fragment frame the whole arrangement.

Meaning & Symbolism

The naturalistic flowers paired with lattice and dotted fills belong to the floral silk and damask repertoire of the early nineteenth century. Textile designers of the period, working in France and England, painted patterns like this as models before weavers set them up on the loom. The brown ground and lightly shaded petals show the designer planning colour and balance for the finished weave. The catalogue dates the drawing 1815 to 1830, and it is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Designed for the Body of a Tee

A border is meant to run along an edge, and this one turns a corner. On a tee, the hem sits at the lower edge of the garment, the same position a bordered band would occupy on a length of cloth. The flowers rise from that edge toward the chest, so the corner of the original pattern becomes the lowest point of the shirt, where the eye lands last.
