Composition & Detail

The staircase runs diagonally from the left, flanked by a balustrade and a pilastered wall. A carved scroll with a spiral volute forms the lower end of the balustrade. On the right, a stone urn with a twisted handle sits on a plinth above a rusticated pier, and a shell-shaped basin projects below it. Trees fill the background and upper right, and a slender obelisk-like form rises near the top of the steps. Pale paper dominates, with grey and charcoal wash building the shadows.

Meaning & Origins

The drawing belongs to the eighteenth-century tradition of imaginary garden views, where designers invented ornamental settings for pleasure and patronage. The scroll, urn and shell basin are characteristic rococo garden ornaments. Their overgrown state reflects the picturesque taste of the mid-eighteenth century, when broken and neglected structures were valued for their emotional effect. Plants have taken root at the foot of the steps, and the staircase leads the eye into the trees, suggesting a landscape where human design has been partly reclaimed by nature.

A tee carries this scene across the chest, so the staircase rises with the wearer's movement and the urn and scroll read clearly up close. Seen from a few steps back, the soft wash and quiet palette give the design its melancholy, romantic mood.
