unknown - Two Flying Putti - CA. 1800 - T-Shirt

Two winged putti drift through the air in brown ink, one turning toward the other while a ribbon of drapery streams behind them across a pale ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from quick, fluent contours in ochre brown ink on warm paper cream, with little internal shading. The winged figure on the left faces right, one wing raised, and the second putto on the right is seen in profile, head bent forward. Loose, wave-like strokes suggest clouds around both figures, and a single cloud shape sits at the left edge. A dark ruled border frames the whole sheet, so the figures float inside a clear rectangle. The trailing drapery carries the eye from left to right, in the direction of the flight.

Meaning & Symbolism

Putti in flight were a stock motif of eighteenth-century decorative art, used on ceilings, overdoors and panels to signal celebration, love and the lightness of the heavenly sphere. Paired figures moving together across clouds carry a sense of harmony and festivity, which suited rooms built for entertaining. This sheet is dated around 1800 and reads as a study made for a larger scheme of painted or plastered ornament. The quick line shows a draughtsman working out the pose and gesture of each figure before committing them to a finished surface. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt collection.

On This Tee

A sketch this light and open suits a shirt, where the image sits on the chest and the eye reads it at close range, like a page held in the hand. The ruled border and the open paper give the design a clean edge, and the figures stay easy to read from a short distance. Wearing the drawing puts two buoyant figures on the move, carried by the same drapery that leads the eye across the original sheet.
