This hoodie design showcases the historical Weerselo coat of arms, a powerful emblem of the region's heritage. The artwork is centered around a quartered shield, the core element of the design.
Quartered Shield Breakdown
The shield's left side features a blue ("azure") field emblazoned with a prominent gold ("or") cross. Emerging from the upper-left of the cross is a bishop, rendered in natural skin tones for his face and hands. He is adorned in gold and silver robes and wears a gold mitre. In his hand, he holds a gold crozier, symbolizing his ecclesiastical authority.
The right side of the shield is a vibrant red ("gules") field that displays three silver ("argent") castles (or "burchten"), each with intricate black ("sable") detailing, completing the heraldic composition.
Symbolism and Meaning
The design is rich in symbolism. The bishop within the cross on the left quarter pays homage to the historical significance of the "Stift," the monastic institution that was once so important to the region of Weerselo.
The three castles, proudly displayed on the right quarter, are a direct reference to the coat of arms of Oldenzaal, reflecting Weerselo's historical ties to that territory.
Above the shield, a golden crown, featuring three leaves and two pearls, completes the design, this was added in 1953 to celebrate the 800-year anniversary of the Benedictine abbey.
