Symbolism and Meaning
The design elements are rich with symbolism. The bishop within the gold cross represents the historical religious importance of the "Stift," the monastic institution of Weerselo. The three castles, taken from the coat of arms of Oldenzaal, signify the historical ties of Weerselo to that territory.
The crown added in the later version serves as a commemoration of the 800-year anniversary of the Benedictine abbey in Weerselo, adding a further layer of historical significance to the design.
