William Glackens, born Philadelphia, PA - Figure Sketches No. 2 - ca. 1905-1910 - T-Shirt

A loose graphite and charcoal study of walking figures on warm tan paper, drawn quickly by William Glackens around 1905 to 1910.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is dominated by buff paper, with dark charcoal-black lines and a few soft grey hatched strokes. Women in wide-brimmed hats and long, flaring skirts walk in profile and three-quarter view across the upper rows. A man in a bowler and suit strides at the right, and a stocky man in a waistcoat stands at the left. A young girl carries a load on her head near the centre, and a small hatted figure sits at the bottom edge. There is no lettering; the figures themselves carry the composition, scattered across the page rather than arranged in a single scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketches record the everyday movement of city streets and promenades. Glackens was a central figure of the Ashcan School and of The Eight, the New York group that broke with academic exhibition conventions to paint modern life as it was lived. Fashionable hats, cinched waists and sweeping hems date the scene to the early twentieth century, when urban dress was changing fast. Repeating the same walking poses reflects a practice of studying gesture and silhouette, fixing the rhythms of a crowd before turning them into finished paintings.

Built for the Crowd Scene

Because the figures spread across the whole sheet, this design suits a shirt where the drawing can wrap around the chest and flow with your movement. The loose, unfinished lines read as a working study, so each figure stands on its own and the page feels like a busy street glimpsed in passing.
