Carlo Bianconi, Italian, 1732–1802 - Design for an escutcheon - 1765 - T-Shirt

This 1765 pen and wash design by Carlo Bianconi is a symmetrical escutcheon frame, built around a blank central panel and surrounded by foliate, shell and strapwork ornament.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is set in sepia brown ink with a grey wash on a pale sheet, and the layout is horizontal. A rectangular centre is left open except for a handwritten inscription reading Carlo Bianconi fecit Anno 1765. A scrolling foliate mask crowns the top, a knotted, interlaced band runs along the base, and curling leaves spread outward from the mask. Twisted strapwork and fan-like shell motifs rise at each end to close the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

A frame like this exists to hold something else, such as a coat of arms, a motto or a dedication. The empty field makes the ornament the subject, following the Baroque and Rococo habit of framing a central space with decorative motifs. The inscription records both maker and year, so the sheet works as a signed record of authorship and as a template for craftsmen who would carve or cast such work. Carlo Bianconi (1732–1802) was an Italian artist, and this dated sheet fixes a point in his output. Armorial and architectural cartouche drawings like this one circulated widely between studios, patrons and workshops across eighteenth-century Europe.

Carried on the Tee

A cartouche is a shape designed to be read as a single, bounded unit, and a tee front suits that well: the mask sits at the collar, the base band crosses the lower chest, and the empty centre becomes the open field where the inscription and frame are seen clearly. The ornament is drawn at a scale that rewards a close look, so the leaves, shells and interlacing show up as you move past it.
