Visual Elements & Composition

Warm ochre covers most of the sheet, with pale white and grey lines drawn across it in a line-engraved style. The lyre sits at the centre, with a tall frame, a crossbar and seven strings rising from a decorated base. Scrolls and rosettes fill its curved arms, and a fringed pedestal supports it. A long laurel branch, its paired leaves tipped with small berries, curves up the left side. A ring of five-pointed stars runs along the top edge, and a small spray of acanthus-like scrolls and flowers rests in one lower corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lyre was the instrument of Apollo and the emblem of the arts, while laurel crowned poets and triumphant leaders. Together they draw on classical ideas of music, poetry and victory. The star ring adds a celestial note, setting the emblem apart as a distinguished device within a larger pattern. The Fabrique de Saint-Ruf was a silk house in Lyon, the city that led European silk weaving in the early nineteenth century, and this drawing dates from 1805 to 1815, when motifs like these were fashionable in silks.
