Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidery or Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

This horizontal border repeats three identical scrolled units, each with a spiral volute, dotted curl and a tall arching feather, drawn as a working model for Lyon silk.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is painted in ochre, which covers most of the ground, with silver white forms and a small dusky mauve shading. Each unit anchors a large spiral scroll at its base, ringed by a double row of small dots and hatched with fine lines at its centre. Ruffled, leaf-like forms fan out along the lower edge, while a feather rises above each scroll and arches to the right, its barbs drawn in fine white strokes. A small round seal sits at the upper left. The three units sit in a steady horizontal row, so the eye moves across the band rather than settling on one motif.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scrolls and acanthus-like leaves come from classical ornament, where spirals and leaves formed the basic vocabulary of architectural and decorative design. They became common in European textile patterns around 1800. The dotted spiral recalls beaded or embroidered ornament, rendered by a weaver as a line of small highlights. Pairing the heavy scroll with a light, arching feather sets weight against lightness and suggests growth and motion. The Fabrique de Saint Ruf was a Lyon silk workshop, and its catalogue dates this sheet to 1805–1815, the classical-revival years of the Empire, when scrolls and plumes filled fashionable silk.

Designed for the Hem and the Line

Borders like this were built to be repeated, and this tee carries that rhythm across the chest and sleeve in the same way the sheet runs along its edge. The scrolls stay in a single horizontal band, so the pattern reads as one continuous procession as you move. Wear it and the feathers arch with your shoulders, and the ochre ground stands out against the fabric.
