Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidery or Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1800–1815 - T-Shirt

Four curled ostrich-type plumes and a single upright feather rise across a warm ochre ground, a textile design from the Fabrique de Saint Ruf in Lyon, dated 1800 to 1815.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre fills most of the sheet. Four broad plumes run in a row along the lower edge, each with a central quill and fringed barbs drawn in white, shaded toward the outside with lilac and pale blue. The plumes sit at slightly different heights and angles, which gives the row a loose, rhythmic movement. Above them, one long feather lifts from the left and curls over at its tip. A small round seal sits near the upper right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

Feathers were a prominent ornamental motif in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century dress, millinery and interior decoration, and they recur throughout the Empire period. Plumes signalled fashion, display and elegance, and an upright feather recalls the flourish of a headdress or a plume worn at court. The Fabrique de Saint Ruf was a Lyon silk workshop, and this sheet belongs to the Lyonnais design output that supplied the fashionable European market around 1800. Drawings like this were prepared for weavers and embroiderers, who translated the painted shapes into threads and wefts.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Plumes read best at a distance, and a tee carries them across the chest where the eye lands first. The curled forms and open spacing of the composition keep the row of feathers legible on a shirt, so the rhythm of the original sheet carries onto the body as it would across a woven border.
