Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for a Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1815-1840 - T-Shirt

A tall, hand-painted floral sheet of open roses, rosebuds and fern fronds, drawn as a repeat design for a Lyon silk.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre-brown covers most of the sheet, with white and pale grey-blue highlights and brown hatching that shapes the leaves and petals. Two large open roses dominate the centre, one with a bright eye of stamens, ringed by smaller roses at different stages of opening and slender-stemmed buds. Clusters of small five-petalled blossoms run down the right edge, and fern fronds spread along the lower part. The bouquet is loose and asymmetrical, and it repeats along the length of the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Roses were among the most favoured motifs of early nineteenth-century European textile design, carrying associations of love, beauty and the brief season of bloom. Their layered heads let a designer fill a silk with continuous pattern, and the mix of full blooms, buds and sprays evokes a garden in full flower. The fern fronds add a feathery counterpoint. The Fabrique de Saint-Ruf was a silk house in Lyon, the centre of European silk weaving in these decades. The 1815 to 1840 date places the sheet among the years when naturalistic florals like this were widely woven for furnishings and dress. Painted designs such as this one record the stage at which a pattern was planned, before it was translated into cloth.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

This bouquet was built to be repeated across a length of cloth, so it reads as one continuous garden rather than a single picture. On a tee, the sheet's vertical rhythm of roses and fern fronds runs down the body as you move, and the pale florals against ochre stand out at a distance as well as up close. It is a pattern made to be seen in motion, which suits a shirt worn through the day.
