Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

Two identical spiral rosettes sit side by side on a warm ochre ground, a pattern sheet from a Lyon silk house working at the height of the Empire.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre fills most of the sheet, with white and pale mauve drawn over it. Each rosette begins with a central lobe packed with fine crosshatching, wraps around a curling inner scroll, and is ringed by a band of closely set dots. Outside that band, flared pointed petals fan out in a whorl, each tipped with a small dotted edge. The two motifs match in size and sit at an even interval, so the layout reads as one steady, repeating rhythm.

Meaning & Symbolism

The spiral is a classical and neoclassical device, and here it carries movement while the rosette holds the eye as a single balanced emblem. Dotted rings and crosshatched fields were the standard way to suggest texture in woven and embroidered work, where surface had to come from stitch or weave rather than shading. The Fabrique de Saint-Ruf was a principal silk workshop in Lyon, the centre of French silk design in this period, and its sheets recorded the motifs it offered clients. This one, dated 1805–1815, shows the house's taste for bold, sculptural floral forms.

Made for the Tee

Printed across the chest, the two rosettes repeat the same way they do on the original sheet, so the pattern keeps its even spacing and its turning movement. Each spiral is large enough to read from a distance and detailed enough to reward a closer look at the dots and crosshatching.
