Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf, Unfinished - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

This is an unfinished pattern drawing of a long leafy spray, rendered in pale mauve and off-white across an ochre ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre fills most of the sheet and sets the tone. A central stem curves horizontally through the composition, carrying large, sharply serrated leaves in pale mauve-white. Some leaves are fully filled, while others remain as light outlines, and a few carry fine hatching for shading. Smaller side shoots and delicate tendrils branch from the stem, and the spray breaks off near the right edge, so the design reads as a continuous run rather than a contained motif.

Meaning & Symbolism

The foliage belongs to the botanical borders and all-over patterns of the early nineteenth century. Its long diagonal movement lets a repeat run along a length of cloth or trimming without a visible join. The mix of filled and outlined leaves records the working method of the period, in which the layout was drawn in outline before colour and shading were added. The Fabrique de Saint-Ruf was a silk workshop in Lyon, the principal centre of French silk design at this time, and its pattern sheets document both drawing stages and finished repeats. This sheet is dated 1805–1815 and is one of the unfinished studies from that period.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A continuous spray suits a tee because the design moves across the body and sleeve rather than sitting in a single frame. The stem and branching shoots carry the eye from one shoulder across the chest, much as the original sheet was meant to run along a length of cloth. The outlined leaves sit beside the filled ones, so the drawing keeps its open, work-in-progress quality on the shirt.
