Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for a Woven Motif of the Fabrique de St. Ruf, Unfinished - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

A bird with spread wings perches atop a beaded laurel wreath, a laurel sprig in its beak, drawn in pale lines across a warm ochre ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre fills most of the sheet, with pale lilac-white line work carrying the drawing and a small amount of olive green. The bird's wing extends to one side, giving the composition its asymmetry, while the laurel sprig rises above its head in small, paired strokes. The wreath is built from two concentric rings: an outer ring of pointed laurel leaves and an inner ring of evenly spaced round beads. Its lower half stays open, so the ground shows through at the centre. The wing feathers are finely marked, and the motif is sketched in outline and partly worked, which is what makes this an unfinished stage of the design.

Meaning & Symbolism

The laurel wreath was the classical emblem of victory and honour, and a bird carrying a laurel sprig extends that message to achievement and peace. Designers in French decorative arts around 1800 drew on antique sources to give textiles this learned, civic character. The motif was drawn for a woven silk from the Fabrique de Saint-Ruf, a silk house in Lyon, the city that led European silk weaving in this period. Repeated across a cloth, the bird and wreath formed a continuous pattern, and the drawing dates from 1805 to 1815.

Carried Across the Chest

A tee is worn close to the body, so the motif sits at chest height and reads at conversation distance. The round form of the wreath centres on the torso, and the outstretched wing carries the eye across the shirt. Because the original was designed to repeat, the single bird and wreath reads as one emblem on the front and as a fragment of a larger woven pattern. The unfinished line work gives the print a drawn, hand-made quality.
