Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for Embroidered or Woven Floral Motifs of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

A pale white and lilac daisy cluster and acanthus-like foliage are reserved on a warm ochre-brown ground, drawn as a floral design for Lyon's silk trade between 1805 and 1815.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre brown fills most of the sheet, with the white and lilac motifs standing out against it. At lower left, a dense cluster of small daisy-like blooms rises from a sweep of serrated leaves, with slender stems and buds threaded between the flowers. Each bloom has a dotted centre and a ring of pale petals, and the foliage is shaded with fine parallel hatching. At right, two larger single flowers sit apart from the cluster: one with broad radiating petals around a grid-like centre, the other with a ring of dots at its heart. The layout pairs a bouquet with isolated blooms, varying scale within one design.

Meaning & Symbolism

The motifs were built for repetition. A workshop drawing like this gave designers a stock of flowers and foliage that could be repeated across a length of cloth. Light figures reserved on a dark ground were a standard way to make a pattern read clearly at a distance, and the pale blooms against brown recall the figured fabrics and printed papers of the period. Lyon was the principal centre of French silk production in the early nineteenth century, and this sheet belongs to that trade, linked by its title to the silk house Fabrique de Saint Ruf.

Where the Pattern Meets the Shirt

A repeat pattern is made to be seen across a room, and this design carries that character onto a tee worn at close range. The bouquet sits low on one side and the single blooms sit apart from it, so the eye moves across the chest and sleeve as it would across a length of cloth. The ochre ground and pale florals read as one cohesive print on the front of the shirt.
