Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidery or a Woven Fabric, of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1800-1815 - T-Shirt

This is a horizontal floral border from the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a Lyon silk workshop, drawn between 1800 and 1815 as a continuous garland of stems, rosettes and rose clusters.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from a single stem repeated across a horizontal band. Each repeat rises into a tall flower with a crown of pointed leaves, sits above a cluster of bell-shaped blossoms, and is balanced by a large rosette with a ribbed, circular centre. Lower on the stems, clusters of small round roses and buds alternate with feathery sprigs of tiny flowers. Broad pale blue leaves, some picked out with white highlights, extend left and right. The palette is restrained: pale blue and white over a warm ochre ground, with steady, even linework throughout.

Meaning & Symbolism

The motifs draw on the garden flowers and botanical forms fashionable in European decoration around 1800. Roses and small blossoms signal abundance, while the alternation of tall and low forms gives the pattern its calm, ordered rhythm. The repeating garland format was used on hems, sashes and furnishing edges. The sheet is a working pattern of the kind weavers and embroiderers translated from painted stems into thread, and it reflects the Empire preference for naturalistic flowers arranged in clear, balanced rhythms.

Made for the Body, Not the Bolt

A border designed to run the length of a hem or sash reads differently on a tee, where the band of stems wraps around the wearer's torso and moves with every turn. The pale blue flowers sit against the ochre ground like a garden seen in passing, so the garland stays legible at a glance and rewards a closer look at the rosettes and sprigs. Worn across the chest, this 1800s rhythm of repeated stems becomes a quiet, ordered piece of botanical decoration.
