Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidery or Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - ca. 1810 - T-Shirt

A vertical panel of classical symmetry, a fluted column crowned with a wreath rising over roses, birdcages and ships inside an ivy border.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built on a strict central axis. A tall fluted column rises from a rectangular pedestal, its capital crowned with a wreath and ivy trailing up its shaft. At its base sits an oval shield holding a monogram, flanked by sprays of roses and buds. Two birdcages and two ships line the lower edge, and the pedestal rests on a bank of clouds. The ground is a warm ochre, with pale silver-grey and white forms drawn over it, and small circular medallions punctuate the ivy-leaf frame at the corners and midpoints.

Meaning & Symbolism

The column and wreath signal honour and commemoration, while the ivy and roses carry associations of constancy and grace. The birdcages stand for the household, and the ships for voyages and trade, so the vignettes combine into a compact allegory of honour, home and enterprise. The panel comes from the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a Lyon silk workshop, and its catalogue record dates it to around 1810. Panels of this format were used for woven or embroidered hangings and furnishing silks, and the work reflects the Empire taste for pictorial allegory set within ornamental borders.

Made for the Chest

Printed on a tee, this panel is worn flat across the body rather than viewed from a distance, so the column stays centred and the framed vignettes read as they were drawn. The symmetry of the composition suits a garment that is seen straight on, and the ochre ground gives the shirt a warm, settled tone.
