Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Beni Hasan - 1844 - T-Shirt

A pencil landscape of a pale limestone escarpment rising above the Nile at Beni Hasan, its face pierced by a steady row of rock-cut openings.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built on horizontal bands. A layered band of pale rock runs across the middle of the sheet, and a line of dark tomb openings is cut evenly along its face, giving the drawing its strongest rhythm. The cliff tops break into irregular ledges, while rubble and sand slope down to the water at the bottom edge. At the lower right, a small cluster of low buildings sits on the shore beside a few tiny figures. The palette is restrained: graphite grey shading over pale paper, with the cliff and river planes laid out in simple tonal masses. The handwritten caption in the lower right reads "Beni Hassan, Nile."

Meaning & Symbolism

Beni Hasan was already central to the travel literature of the period. Its cliffs hold rock-cut tombs of provincial officials from the Middle Kingdom, and for a traveller moving up the Nile, the escarpment marked the threshold between the cultivated river valley and the desert beyond. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, drew it as a horizon of stone rather than as a ruin. The sheet belongs to his observational studies from his travels in Egypt, made quickly on the spot and later developed in many cases into larger finished paintings.

Cut to the Shirt

A landscape this wide suits a shirt that is worn and seen at a distance, with the cliff band sitting across the chest and the row of openings reading as a single rhythm from across a room. The drawing's quiet structure of stone, water and sky fits the plain crew neck and the unbroken front of a tee, letting the pencil lines carry the design without competing for attention.
