Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Capri - 1854 - T-Shirt

This pencil and wash study records a sheer sea rock off the east end of Capri, drawn on 21 July 1854 with its flat grassy summit and a row of dark stacks beyond.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is split into two views. Above, a distant slope of pale island rises toward dark rock stacks at the right, labelled "Capri, East End." Below, a large block of rock fills most of the lower sheet. Its faces are built from vertical streaks and shadowed grooves in brown and mauve, and its flat top carries a few small buildings and sparse vegetation. The sea sits at the base as a thin blue-grey wash. The palette is parchment, rose-brown, pale grey-blue and dark umber, and the caption "Rock off East end of Capri" with the date 21 July 1854 is written in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The rock is the subject. It stands out of the water as a massive form rather than as part of the island's outline, and its vertical striations and level top give it an architectural presence. The small buildings on the summit mark a settled place on an otherwise sheer coast. Placing the distant island beside the near stack sets the rock within the wider shoreline, so the sheet records one particular feature of the coast as much as a view. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, was an American painter, and this 1854 sheet shows his habit of recording landforms with precise, layered handling, working directly from the motif in pencil and muted wash.

Carrying the Coast Onto Your Chest

A tee gives this study room to be seen at a distance and up close alike. The sheer rock and its striated faces read clearly across the front of the shirt, and the quiet parchment and grey-blue tones sit easily against everyday clothing. Wear it as a reminder of a single stretch of Capri's shoreline, drawn with patience nearly two centuries ago.
