Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Villa in Genoa - 1854 - T-Shirt

A pencil study of an arched garden gateway, with a statue standing in its niche and cypresses rising behind a curved stone wall.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built around a single arched opening set into a curved wall. Inside the arch, a standing statue rests on a plinth, partly screened by foliage. Tall cypresses and rounded trees climb behind the wall, and a building with a pitched roof appears at the upper right. Shrubs and a small tree flank the wall on either side, while a path runs across the foreground. The work is rendered in soft, feathered pencil on warm buff paper, with the palette sitting in parchment beige and sepia brown. The caption "Villa in Genoa," the artist's initials, and the date "Mch 31. 54" sit at the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The framed niche and its sculpted figure belong to the vocabulary of formal villa gardens, where a statue closes a view and marks the threshold between the house grounds and the path outside. The cypresses, another traditional garden tree, lend the scene a sense of enclosure and age. Together they present the villa as a place of ordered retreat. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, the American painter born in Manlius, New York, drew Italian gardens and architecture during his travels in the 1850s. This sheet is a study, where the focus rests on the structure of the wall, the placement of the statue, and the massing of trees rather than on a finished composition.

Made for the Shirt

A tee carries a composed scene across the chest, so the arch and its statue read as a single focal point at eye level. The cypresses and wall frame the figure the way the original garden does, and the buff tones of the drawing sit naturally against the blank of the shirt. Wear it and the gateway stays at the centre of the view, with the path and surrounding trees opening out beneath it.
