unknown - Copies of Romanesque Letters and Motifs for a Woven Fabric - 1825–1850 - T-Shirt

This design reproduces a sheet of Romanesque-inspired letter-forms and ornamental motifs, set in orange and gold on a warm brown ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

A large letter B dominates the sheet, its curving bowls filled with spiralling tendrils, leaves and stylised animal heads. To its right, a tall vertical column of interlaced knots and scrolls rises the full height of the design. At lower right, a circular roundel carries dense looped strapwork and foliage. Smaller diamond and quatrefoil motifs are scattered across the upper area, several accented in red and one in pale blue, and a small checkered block sits near the lower left. The brown ground carries most of the colour, with the orange gold forms standing out clearly against it.

Meaning & Symbolism

The motifs draw on the interlace, animal forms and knotwork of Romanesque manuscripts and sculpture. Their purpose was decorative rather than narrative. Each letter, roundel and column is built to read as an independent unit that could be transferred to cloth, so the rhythm of each shape mattered as much as its detail. The title dates the sheet to 1825–1850, a period when designers studied medieval manuscripts and buildings and adapted their patterns to contemporary weaving and printing. The original sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection, and this design reproduces it as a record of that revival.

On This Tee

Because each unit was designed to stand alone, the large B, the vertical column and the roundel work as separate panels rather than one scene. They sit well on a tee, where the eye moves from one form to the next. The brown ground and orange gold forms carry the design across the shirt, and the smaller red and blue accents give the eye a place to rest.
