unknown - Design for a lamp - ca. 1855 v1 - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil study of a standing lamp, its spherical globe lifted on a carved pineapple stem above a stepped pedestal.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on a single vertical axis. A large globe, shaded in soft gradations, dominates the upper half, while the pineapple's diamond-patterned skin and pointed crown of leaves form the textured centre of the design. Broad, curling leaves spread beneath the fruit, and a square plinth with a fluted, waisted base anchors the whole form. The palette is restrained: pencil grey and pale grey shading on parchment-toned paper. The catalogue number 1959-206-5 appears on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pineapple was a long-established emblem of hospitality and welcome in European decorative arts, and by the nineteenth century it had become a familiar motif in garden furniture, architectural finials and lighting. Setting it atop a globe gives the lamp a sense of display, so the functional object also reads as a symbol of generosity. The smooth globe against the carved fruit balances plain and ornamented form. The sheet is dated to around 1855, when designers worked across architecture, metalwork and interior fittings. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Where the Drawing Sits on the Tee

This is a design meant to be read at a glance, and a chest-front print suits it. The globe sits at the upper chest, the pineapple and leaves carry the eye down the centre, and the plinth closes the composition at the waist. Seen from across a room, the shaded globe and the textured fruit still separate clearly, so the drawing keeps its structure whether you wear it close up or from a distance.
