unknown - Design for an Oil Lamp - ca. 1855 v2 - T-Shirt

This design presents a mid-nineteenth-century oil lamp as a finished decorative object, drawn upright and set out in close, careful detail against a pale buff ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

A single lamp sits at the centre of the sheet, and everything is arranged around its vertical symmetry. The body is a deep cornflower blue, bordered in gilt, with a reserved oval panel at the front painted with roses and smaller blossoms in pink, red and cream. Two gilt handles curve out from the shoulders, built from tightly wound scrolls, and a pierced gilt collar supports a stepped burner fitting. A plain frosted white globe forms the shade, and a broad gilt foot cut with open rocaille scrolls anchors the whole form. The parchment cream ground takes up most of the picture, so the blue and gilt read with strong contrast. The only inscription is the numeral N° 55.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lamp belongs to the rococo revival, which spread widely across France and the wider decorative trade in the middle of the nineteenth century. Scrolling ornament of this kind was applied to lighting as readily as to clocks, vases and furniture. Pairing painted floral panels with gilt metal mounts on a coloured ground suited formal rooms, where the lamp was meant to be admired as well as used. The catalogue dates the sheet ca. 1855, the decade when this style was at its most prominent.

Where the Artwork Meets the Tee

A lamp is a tall, upright form, and this tee gives its design a broad, flat field across the chest where the vertical composition can stand fully upright. The blue body, painted panel and gilt scrolls read clearly at a glance and up close alike, so the ornament stays legible as you move through the day. Wearing the lamp puts its decorative detail in view, much as the original drawing was made to show it.
