unknown - Design for an Oil Lamp - ca. 1855 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a presentation drawing of a single mid-nineteenth-century oil lamp, shown upright and finished in full colour.

Visual Elements & Composition

The lamp is centred on a plain parchment-cream ground, so the object is the only thing on the page. A cornflower-blue body dominates, with a painted panel at the front holding a loose bouquet of roses and other flowers in pink, red and white. Two gilt handles rise from the shoulders in full scrolling curves, and a pierced gilt collar sits above the body. The base is a gilt foot of rocaille scrolls and acanthus-like leaves, and a round frosted-white globe crowns the form. The composition is strictly vertical and symmetrical. A small inscription, "N° 55", appears in the drawing.

Meaning & Symbolism

Blue grounds, painted flowers and gilt rococo mounts were a familiar combination in luxury interiors of the period. The drawing reflects a time when domestic lighting was made as a display piece as well as a source of light, and it presents the lamp as an object for a formal room, where its decoration would be seen as much as its glow. Sheets like this were made by designers and workshops for decorative manufacture, so that clients could approve a piece before it was produced. The original is dated ca. 1855 and is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Designed for the Chest

A drawing built around one upright object suits a tee, where the lamp sits centred across the chest and reads at conversation distance. Its vertical stack of shade, collar, body and foot follows the shape of the wearer's torso, and the cream ground keeps the blue and gilt focal. Each detail stays readable close up, rewarding a second look.
