unknown - Devotional Picture- The Miraculous Virgin of Cell - ca. 1750 - T-Shirt

This is a red-toned devotional sheet built around a crowned Virgin and Child, set in radiating light and framed by small scenes of travel and camp life.

Visual Elements & Composition

The Virgin dominates the upper half of the design, rendered in a bell-shaped rose-red mantle dotted with small white marks and a central cross. She holds a crowned Child seated against her, and rays of light fan out behind them. Two small winged angel heads sit at the upper corners. Below the figures, a cloud-like form carries a smaller framed panel of a Virgin and Child with a second woman. Along the lower edge run three cartouches: a rider on horseback at left, a group of tents at right, and a plain shield-shaped field at centre, with a ribbon banner beneath bearing the inscription Ursprung, meaning origin.

Meaning & Symbolism

The crown, the rays and the angelic figures mark the Virgin's heavenly authority and the sacred character of the image. The title ties the picture to the cult of a miraculous image of the Virgin at Cell, and the banner's word for origin names the shrine from which that devotion spread. The horseman and the tents recall the pilgrimage journeys that carried such images to the faithful. The sheet belongs to the popular devotional prints made for pilgrims and households in the middle of the eighteenth century, when images like this were copied and distributed to commemorate a shrine. The catalogue dates it to about 1750, and the Cooper Hewitt collection holds it as a drawing.

Wearing the Image

A tee carries this composition across the chest, so the crowned Virgin sits at the centre of the wearer's view and the rays rise toward the shoulders. The cartouches of rider and tents fall lower, reading as a narrative that unfolds as you look down. The design rewards a closer look, where the pilgrimage scenes and the banner sit beside the central devotional figure.
